Key Benefits of Biofeedback Therapy

August 5, 2020

There are many benefits to biofeedback therapy, in this post we will discuss some of the key benefits and what exactly this therapy entails. First let's start by explaining what biofeedback therapy actually does. Biofeedback therapy teaches individuals different ways to improve their physical and mental health by understanding and controlling their bodies.

Some body functions you control, like raising your hand, or lifting your leg to take a step. Other body functions, like beating your heart, skin temperature, and blood pressure are controlled involuntarily by your nervous system. These involuntary body functions just happen in response to your environment. Biofeedback therapy teaches you techniques that can help you gain more control over these normally involuntary functions.

Biofeedback Therapy Treatments

  • Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

  • Alcohol Use Disorder

  • Substance Abuse

  • Drug Addiction

  • Anxiety

  • Chronic Pain

  • Headaches

  • Migraines

  • Hypertension

  • Insomnia

  • Traumatic Brain Injury

How Does Biofeedback Therapy Work

During a biofeedback therapy session, sensors are attached to your body, usually your fingertips, that measure your bodily functions and present them on a screen so you can view them graphically. Research shows that therapy is far more effective when we can visualize our reactions to stress. Once we are able to connect how we feel to our bodily functions we can begin training ourselves in techniques to change these reactions.

Benefits of Biofeedback Therapy

Biofeedback therapy does not involve any medications. This makes biofeedback therapy a great option for anyone who wants to avoid prescription medications such as recovering addicts, people with allergies, and pregnant or breastfeeding women. It is also revered by those people who would rather use self control to cure their ailments as opposed to an outside source. As biofeedback therapy doesn’t involve the use of medications the potential side effects of taking medications are also avoided.

If you are referred  to a biofeedback therapist by your doctor and the sessions don't help relieve your symptoms, call your doctor to discuss the situation. Your doctor may need to reevaluate your original diagnosis.
